The day started as normal for Mercy and Chidi. Nothing seemed different. It was like any other day. Stepping out of our home in Nairobi, Kenya they bought the newspaper and the front page carried a spectacular heading "Meru District rates 40% in HIV infection" After thoroughly reading the article, they were devastated. The message from that article implanted in them the confirmation that God would rather have them leave their comfort zone and offer part of their lives to the service of humanity. In 2002, Mercy and Chidi decided to forgo all comfort. They walked out of their old lives and rented a house in Meru district, [Mercy's home town] where they still reside. Their hope and dream was to give hope and save lives of children, families and other individuals who are infected and/or affected by the HIV/AIDS scourge. The driving force was to fully answer God's call in their lives as well as help children and families in great need. Mercy gave up her work in Nairobi city with a reputable NGO. With a degree in Social Sciences and trained as a seasoned social worker, with many years working experience with humanitarian organizations (Catholic Relief Services and German Agro Action) Mercy refused further offers to go into full time employment. Chidi is a seasoned international humanitarian worker who holds degrees in administration. He has over 14 years experience in humanitarian activities involving relief activities, drought and refugee operations, food aid programming, commodity accounting, logistics, administration, management and data analysis. He worked with the United Nations in Kenya and Pakistan and cross-border missions into Afghanistan. He also worked with World Vision International in Kenya and Zambia. However, choosing to move to Meru did not happen without some second
thought. It meant giving serious considerations between giving part of their life experiences in service to humanity and resisting the
temptation of getting a salary at the end of the month. They were focused
and determined. "We had to do what was necessary to save lives and give
hope." Unto us service is a divine responsibility to save lives and give hope to the glory of God.
