Our goal is to build a high quality secondary education centre for the whole community, which is to be called the Emma Academy, as a legacy toEmma McCune who lies in rest in Leer, Southern Sudan.
The twenty year long Sudanese civil war has meant that schooling in Southern Sudan today mostly consists of teaching under trees. Many former child soldiers have not found their way back into education, and traditionally only 1 in 5 girls are supported to finish High School.
We are currently renovating and expanding the current Leer Primary School. We have replaced the roof, re-painted the existing classrooms and erected a perimeter fence. Our next step is to construct 5 new Primary School classrooms. The fundraising target is at $220,000; so far we have raised over $180,000.
