Connectivity to Enhance Global Human Security

CEGHS bridges three worldwide movements of social change: connectivity, economic and social development, and peacebuilding. Electronic connectivity is providing new services and opportunities to many millions of people. CEGHS helps to leverage that new capability by linking it with economic and social development and peacebuilding, yielding broadly shared benefits. The resulting synergy helps these movements to enhance human security by meeting diverse human needs in developing countries, especially countries experiencing violent conflict and instability. Human security is a policy and planning framework that promotes peace, stability and secure communities. Currently, the CEGHS program is focused on opportunities in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and on mobile connectivity.
Connectivity as a New Social Influence
There are more than 4 billion mobile phone users worldwide, and a rapidly expanding range of services is being offered to them. New services relate to finance, health, education, agriculture, and other sectors. Grant funding plays an important role in launching these services, often followed by a rapid transition to commercial viability. Technical progress is improving the capabilities of phones and associated devices, and is narrowing the gap between broadband and mobile connectivity. The new services already contribute significantly to economic and social development, and have been employed at pilot scale to assist peacebuilding. There is considerable potential to expand the scope and reach of services that link these movements, leveraging the movements' capabilities through synergistic projects that yield broad benefits
